A Measure of Faith

“For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith. For as we have many members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function, so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another.” Romans 12:3-5 (NKJV)

Last year I attended a conference that hosted a special prayer session for attendees. Everyone came out glowing with different reports and “words from the Lord.” As I waited for my turn, I asked the Lord to just give me a simple prayer like a “normal” person. My life has been so filled with profound thoughts, experiences and revelations that I tend to avoid them now because of the energy they require. While this attitude was totally wrong, it matched my weary spirit. God understood because He took that prayer time to encourage me in the areas of existing ministry. Later that year, when my spirit was receptive and rested, God brought several new visions for our future ministry. I’m thankful that God knows how much we can handle – even when we do not!

A small prophecy may be a banquet feast to a new Christian and a burden to the established believer. God has given each of us different gifts, and various areas of passion, to encompass His entire purpose on Earth. We are all held to a different standard in His eyes according to the gifts and talents we have been blessed with.

The next time you receive a direction from the Lord in ministry that seems more than you can handle, trust Him. God alone can see the tapestry of our lives while we can only see our small corner piece. He knows what He is doing!
